Perhaps besides the considerably energy-saving, another essential benefit of LED is its long life. The lifetime of a LED is vastly more extended than that of incandescent, fluorescent, or HID lamp sources. Unlike a Halid lamp, LED source depreciates gradually over a very long period. Based on Lumileds Statistics, one pieces of qualified LED can last 100,000 hours.
LED Sports Floodlight Life Span Reference
The life span of an LED floodlight depends on the performance of the LED, driver and heatsinks. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) currently recommends calculating the life of an LED as the point at which the LED reaches 30 % lumen depreciation. The remained 70% is called ‘L70’. 70% brightness of LED is regarded as the level from that human eyes can perceive LED depreciation. Different from traditional Halide lighting, LED module does no ‘burn-out. It does not immediately fail even if it reaches its L70 level rather than depreciates until it dims to be unuseable.
Different manufacturers offer different reference for their products. L80 Or L90 reference is also available these days. However, it does not necessarily say L80 is better than L70. It depends on how long the TM21 report gives under the term of L70 or L80 or L90. I once read some reference of L90=100,000 hours by google. I would like to remind my reader to be careful when reading that. L90=100,000 hours is very challenging in the market these days.
TM 21 is the most expected guidance for LED life span. Many governments refer to TM 21 statistics as their energy management index to see if they will grant free fund for refurbishing or newly invested LED lighting project. Floodlights that has TM21 Certificate is likely to get government financial support.

LEDs, are alike other light sources, see their output decline over time. However, given the remarkably longer lifes pan of LEDs and the absence of visible signs indicating their decreasing performance, it can be more complex to accurately measure and communicate light output over time. To help address this issue, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North American (IESNA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have put in place standards for reporting the useful lifetime of an LED package: LM-80 (Measuring Luminous Flux and Color Maintenance of LED Packages, Arrays and Modules) and TM-21(Projecting long term Lumen Maintenance of LED Light Sources).
TM-21 outlines a standard calculation method to predict future lumen depreciation using LM-80 data. This standards apply to lifespan projection of LED package, array or module alone.
TM 21 uses the below data of LM 80 for calculation (Lumen maintenance)
- Sample size and calculation data
- It is encourage to adopt short interval and long time data
- Two calculations:
- At the same burning conditions
- The temperature of the actual temperature testing point
- The calculation from the same burning conditions
