The Best LED Lighting for Badminton courts

Badminton is one of the fastballs with rich potential. Only maximum light reflectance from its white feathers can make the shuttlecock visible during the high-speed moving. In this topic, we are ging to discuss Enkarl LED floodlight and High bay for Badminton Courts.

1.Characteristics of Badminton Court lighting

Designers must keep in mind that badminton court lighting must make players track flying orbit against the background without disabling glare and over brightness. Direct illuminance over badminton courts and daylight from the window and door is not allowed.

Luminaries toward the rear of the courts should be able to individually switch on/off to give a pleasing contrast to white shuttlecock and background; Light for the spectator must be able to dim during the play.

Besides, shuttlecock can fly high over the net, and enough vertical illuminance over the entire court is a must. Calculation area, installation height and lighting standard are the prerequisites to finish a badminton lighting design.

4. General rules of LED lighting design for Badminton Courts

The primary aims of badminton lighting design are to provide a safe environment for players, adequate illumination of shuttlecocks and court marking, and suitable and sufficient light for spectators. It should enable players and game officials one perfect their execution of duties in this design. Changes in illuminance levels will cause difficulties, inconsistent visibility and harm gaming fair.

As to glare, even it is hard to eliminate all over the field since the viewing point, and slope angle is ever-changing. Efforts on minimizing the glare are still imperative in the following perspective:

  • Luminaries designed for glare control;
  •  No direct eye contact. Lighting should not be installed at the possible shuttlecock moving orbit over the field.

5. Lighting Standards for Badminton Courts

EN 12193, BWF, Badminton European, Olympic Games, and Sports England have their relative lighting standards over the badminton courts based on the class.

5.1 As the widely used lighting standard in Europe, EN12193:2007 stipulate badminton courts need to meet below requirement:

* For TV broadcasting, it should comply with relative television lighting standards.

5.2 Sports England Standard of Badminton Court Lighting

Centreline and 3 meters away in both directions. If in the case that badminton courts are in a multi-use hall, then these three lights should be separately wired (Indicated by below). A little different from EN12193, sports England recommends light level over the centre of the court should be a little higher than that on end. Average 500 lux, minimum 300 lux, and maximum 600 lux at 5 M high are more proper.

5.3 BWF Standard of Badminton Court lighting

As a world badminton governing institution, BWF gives its members the most authoritative lighting standards.

  • 5.3.1 Grade 1 and 2 Tournaments lightingIt is a stipulation that the minimum lighting level should be 1000 Lux plus even light over all the field.
  • 5.3.2 Grade 3 Tournaments lightingA minimum lighting level is 1000 Lux plus even light over the court area.
  • 5.3.3 Still photographers lighting

1500-1800 Lux is to set up optimal conditions. TV production lighting – Olympic Games, Grade 1 (BWF Tournaments/Major Events, except Tournaments for seniors) and Grade 2, BWF World Tour Levels 1-5. 5.6.1. BWF and TV Host Broadcasters should not be less than 1500-1600 Lux on courts with TV production plus even light over the courts.

6. Selection of LED light

As indicated in part 4, luminaries used in the badminton courts should be good at glare control. 7. Successful Cases of LED light for Badminton Courts

  • Guang Zhou International Badminton Training Centre

Guang Zhou International Badminton Training Centre is the only comprehensive sports venue in the world designed for badminton training and tournaments. It has six main tournaments courts and six training courts, meeting the highest standard of BWF tournaments. 150 W Azure Floodlight was used in this project.

  • Fo Shan Sports venue

Fo Shan Sports venue–badminton comprehensive hall is another successful retrofit lighting project after international training centre. 60 pieces of Enkarl X-tra highbays are applied to achieve 280 lux over 8 courts. With its exclusive hood, glare has been completely controlled.

  • Guang Zhou Badminton Centre

48 Pieces of 200 W Enkarl X-tra Highbays was used for six courts.
